Campus Bird Count 2017

The Centre for Urban Ecology and Sustainability (CUES) participated in the 2017 Campus Bird Count (CBC) held between 17 February and 20 February, counting birds at the Dheerpur, Rohini, Karampura and Kashmere Gate campuses of Ambedkar University Delhi (AUD).

Prior to the event, an orientation was conducted by Prof. Geetha Venkataraman on 15 February 2017. The orientation helped us learn about unique characteristics, including behaviour, calls, physical appearance, etc. of some of the birds that are common to the city of Delhi. The orientation was very useful for those who were new to birding.

On the first day of the CBC event, a team of birders from AUD assembled at Dheerpur at 7 am. Using binoculars and bird books, we systematically scanned the Campus and Wetland Park recording some 50 species of birds, although the total count of birds was much higher. On the second day, we split into two groups, with one group birding at the Karampura campus of AUD, and the other group birding at the Rohini campus of AUD. On the fourth and final day of the event, we counted birds on the Kashmere Gate Campus of AUD. The final count of bird species on all four campuses at the end of the CBC event stood at around 65.
